Charges do not equal guilt

The prosecution has an obligation under the United State’s and Maine’s Constitutions and under the rules of court to provide discovery in a timely manner. We do not have trials by surprise in Maine. When the prosecution, your government, decides to charge individuals they should be prepared to provide discovery and to try the case.

Charging an individual and having their names smeared in the press creates a huge intrusion into their lives. A mere accusations requires the individual to spend a substantial amount of money on a defense team, can cost them their job, alter their relationships, and forever brand them a criminal (even if found not guilty). To charge someone the prosecution only needs probable cause but to convict they need proof beyond all reasonable doubt.

When you hear of someone being charged with a crime keep in mind that nothing has been proven, the press is in the business of making money and will sensationalize things, and the individual is innocent even if charged! Do not pass judgment but keep an open mind. Try to educate yourself through reliable sources.
