What is a misdemeanor?

The distinction between a misdemeanor and felony can vary from State to State.  In Maine, a misdemeanor is a crimes that carries a maximum sentence of less then one year.  This includes only Class D and Class E crimes in Maine.  A Class D crime carries a maximum possible sentence of 364 days, $2,000 fine, and most Class D crimes have no probation.  The exception to Class D crimes that do have probation can be found here.  A Class E crime carries a maximum possible sentence of 6 months, $1,000 fine, and most Class E crimes have no probation exception those listed here.
